What is Schroth?

Schroth is a 3 dimensional method of self correction designed to re align the scoliotic spine.

Key Aspects of Schroth Therapy:

3D Approach

Addresses the scoliosis in three dimensions: sagittal (front-to-back), frontal (side-to-side), and horizontal (rotation).

Targeted Exercises

Exercises are customized to the patient's unique curve pattern, focused on increasing curve mobility, reducing curve rotation and strengthening specific muscle groups. This combination gives patients the ability bring their spine close to a neutral position.

Rotational Breathing

Patients learn to breathe in a way that helps expand concave areas of the chest and counteract the twisting of the spine.

Postural Awareness

Individuals are trained to recognize their postural imbalances and maintain a corrected, upright posture during daily activities.

Goal

To prevent further progression of the curve, reduce pain, improve respiratory function, and increase self-confidence.

Schroth Best Practice

An updated, often faster-to-learn version of the traditional method, focusing on shorter, more focused exercise sessions.

Adolescents

Primarily used to manage Idiopathic Scoliosis and prevent the need for surgery.

Adults

Used to stabilize curves, reduce pain, and prevent further, age-related curve progression.

Schroth Method

I use a combination of the original Schroth exercises and the Schroth Best Practice modifications, which are intended to make exercise performance at home easier and use less specialist equipment.

Schroth combines well with bracing, and there is evidence indicating better outcomes with combined therapy.

Schroth is also useful in preparation for surgery by maximising curve flexibility, and in rehabilitating post surgery.

The evidence base for the efficacy of Schroth has grown significantly in the last ten years, showing that curve size can be reduced, cosmetic appearance and quality of life improved.
